"Bookends" | Shannon Dombkowski

Hi FJ friends!

Shannon here with my first blog post as part of the FJ creative team. I'm sharing a layout that I made in my ringed travelers notebook featuring the gorgeous patterned papers from the Julia kit. I love when I snap a photo of my oldest and youngest daughter together. I call them my bookends since they are the beginning and the end when it comes to our kids. With almost 6 years between them, they have a truly special and unique bond. I always appreciate a chance to document them!

I love the soft colors mixed with the strong shade of green in the Julia kit. I knew that I wanted to use quite a few patterned papers so my first step was choosing those. I pulled papers with a more graphic feel to them - stripes, polka dots, grid, and rainbows. The white space in the papers gives the same light and airy feel that is in my photo. When layering, I made sure to cut my papers large enough so that a good amount of each paper could be on display on my page. To really let the papers shine, I kept my embellishments to a minimum. I used Essentials Puffy Alphabet Stickers in black to create my title.

I used a Julia journaling card as a spot to house my journaling. I didn't want the full card so I cut it down to a square. To bring in a little color, I decided to use paper instead of embellishments. I cut a small strip of star patterned paper and green solid paper. Then, I punched a border along the edges. This is one of my favorite ways to add a little something extra to my pages!

To keep the whole layout cohesive, I did three things. First, I used green on both sides of my page. I added it in just little pops of color here and there but it ties the whole page together. Second, I added the pink grid patterned paper across both sides of the page as my background. Third, I added a strip of washi tape in opposite corners of the layout. These three small things play big roles in making the page look finished.

I love the look of all those patterned papers on display! Thank you for joining me on the blog today!
