Just be You | Mandy Melville

Hi everyone! Mandy here with you today to share a layout that I created using the gorgeous 'Jane' kit!

I documented a photo of my eldest daughter taken on her first day of high school earlier this year. With the teenage years just around the corner and many challenges ahead, I really wanted to create a page with a personal message to encourage her.

Today I have a tip for using the 3x4 journaling cards from the cut-apart sheet on a 12x12 scrapbook layout. Although these are perfect for pocket page scrapbooking, they are just as great to use on your layouts! I actually didn't use any of the 12x12 patterned papers on this layout, only a sheet of the grey solid color paper and three of the 3x4 journaling cards!

It looks like I've used larger pieces of patterned paper doesn't it? The way to make this work is by cutting the 3x4 cards in half and tucking them into the layers in a way that gives the illusion that they are one continuous piece! So with the black and white checked card, I cut it in half vertically, then turned the pieces on their side and tucked one half under the top of the photo and one under the bottom. I then tucked the green 3x4 card under the right hand side the photo to overlap those two pieces, and it now looks as though that black and white patterned paper is one long piece! I did a similar thing with the card that has the little starbursts on it. I cut it in half horizontally, cut a fishtail banner out of each piece, and then tucked them in under each side of the paper layers, giving the impression that it is one piece that runs all the way along! I think that this is a great way of making use of all those 3x4 journaling cards, don't you?

I kept the embellishing on this page fairly minimal as I wanted to keep the focus on the photo and the journaling. The 'Just be You' wood veneer phrase was the perfect title for this page and was exactly the message that I wanted to give to my daughter! I also used the stamp that says 'Have Courage', which further added to the theme of the page! I couldn't resist adding one of the gorgeous roses from the sticker sheet to my layout... It added the perfect touch of prettiness to a very structured and linear page.

I typed up my journaling and cut it into strips to adhere to my page, then stamped 'remember this' underneath. I finished my layout off by adding a strip of washi tape to the top left and bottom right edges of my white cardstock, and then added a few of the black cardstock stars from the kit.
